Indiana-PAW Pet Of The Week Sponsored By

Maverick

Maverick Background: Looks can be deceiving - although Maverick looks like some big, macho dog, he's only 12 inches tall and only 18 lbs.! Unfortunately, Maverick's family had to give him up, so now he's looking for a new family. Maybe this little guy would be the perfect addition to your family?

Gender: Male

Breed: Miniature Pinscher

Approximate Age: 5-6 years old

Spay/Neuter Status: Yes, Maverick is neutered!

Vaccinations: Yes, Maverick is up-to-date with all his vaccines.

Housetrained: Yes, Maverick is house-trained; however, he does need to be given consistency in house training as he can be a tad bit oppositional.

Compatibility with Children: Maverick should not go to a home with small children, unless they have experience with small dogs. Maverick does not like the insecurity of small hands.

Personality: Maverick is a sweet little guy, who does enjoy playing but can get a little carried away & happy.

Ideal Home: Maverick would love to find a home where lots of love & attention is given.

To Adopt: If you are interested in adopting or meeting Maverick, please contact Internet Miniature Pinscher Rescue. You can contact Maverick's foster mom, Tammy Fraser by e-mailing her at tammy@indiana-paw.com for more information.

Rocky

Rocky Background: This is Rocky! Rocky was rescued with his father, Baby (below) from the cold, harsh winter weather in an Indiana trailer park where they'd been left to die with several other dogs. They were being provided food and other essentials by Volunteers For Animal Welfare, but were running out of time with the subzero winter weather. Finally, one of Indiana-PAW's best foster parents stepped up and agreed to take the remaining two dogs (Rocky & Baby) into her home in Lafayette. They are no longer freezing and chained to trailers. Now they are warm, safe, in a loving foster home, where they've been socialized and readied for adoption. Why not make Rocky's dream come true?

Gender: Male

Breed: Akita mix

Approximate Age: 2.5 years old (only 39 lbs.)

Spay/Neuter Status: Yes, Rocky is neutered!

Vaccinations: Yes, Rocky is up-to-date with all his vaccines.

Housetrained: Rocky is crate trained and mostly housebroken!

Compatibility with Other Animals: Rocky does very well with other dogs, but is not good with cats.

Personality: Rocky is a high energy boy that loves to play.

Ideal Home: Rocky would love a family to call his own that will play with him, care for him, and give him the loving home he deserves. Are you Rocky's forever family?

To Adopt: If you are interested in adopting or meeting Rocky, please contact Volunteers for Animal Welfare at pb2manydogs@peoplepc.com or visit them online at ww.petfinder.com/shelters/IN176.html. You can also contact his foster mom, Karen Spikes in Lafayette at karen@indiana-paw.com.

Baby

Baby Background: If you've ready Rocky's story (above) then you also know about Baby, Rocky's father. Both were left in subzero winter weather until they were finally brought to a foster home in Lafayette where they could recover and be socialized. Baby is now ready for adoption and looking for that happy ending that he so deserves.

Gender: Male

Breed: Akita mix (about 54 lbs.)

Approximate Age: 4 years old

Spay/Neuter Status: Yes, Baby is neutered!

Vaccinations: Yes, Baby is up-to-date with all his vaccines.

Housetrained: Baby is crate trained and 95% housebroken.

Compatibility with Other Animals: Baby plays well with all kinds of dogs and is OK with cats.

Personality: Baby is a special needs boy in that he has hip dysplasia resulting in very limited use of his left leg. However, this in no way hinders him from playing, loving, and being loved.

Ideal Home: Baby's ideal home would be with a loving, caring family that'll give him the attention that he has wanted for so many years. Help give him his happy ending.

To Adopt: If you are interested in adopting or meeting Baby, please contact Volunteers for Animal Welfare at pb2manydogs@peoplepc.com or visit them online at ww.petfinder.com/shelters/IN176.html. You can also contact his foster mom, Karen Spikes in Lafayette at karen@indiana-paw.com.

Shayla

Shayla Background: Shayla is just the girl for you if you are looking for a young dog who can be trained to be your perfect companion. She is an active young girl who needs plenty of play time.

Gender: Female

Breed: Alaskan Malamute

Approximate Age: 1 year old

Spay/Neuter Status: Yes, Shayla is spayed!

Vaccinations: Yes, Shayla is up-to-date with all her vaccinations, she's microchipped, and she's heartworm negative.

Housetrained: Yes, Shayla is both is crate trained and housetrained!.

Compatibility with Children: Shayla is naturally curious and fun-loving, and would probably enjoy having kids around. She is a boisterous girl and could possibly knock small children down, though.

Compatibility with Other Animals: Shayla would love a home where she could have a playful large-breed companion or a home with someone who could take her to the dog park to socialize. Shayla is being fostered with a cat, and does fine with him. Because she is playful, we do recommend she is supervised with smaller animals, but she is not aggressive at all towards them.

Personality: Shayla rides well in the car. She has learned to sit on command, but needs work with other commands. She is strong and will pull on leash, so someone who will work on her training or a strong handler is essential. Shayla is still very puppyish in her chewing, so she does need to be crated when no one is home. She loves stuffed animals, but can easily shred them so she will need other types of chews/toys while unsupervised.

Ideal Home: Shayla has not had a lot of training, so she would be best placed with someone with northern breed experience or a willingness to learn and take obedience class with her.

To Adopt: If you are interested in adopting or meeting Shayla, please contact Indy Homes for Huskies by emailing indyhomesforhuskies@yahoo.com. You can also find out more, and fill out an adoption application, online at www.indyhomesforhuskies.org.

Chance

Chance Background: If you're looking for a well-trained, energetic dog to match your active lifestyle, Chance is the dog for you. This wonderful dog has recently had the opportunity to spend some time in jail -- as part of a "prison dog" program where prisoners take care of and train dogs so that they will make wonderful pets. Thus, Chance knows many commands and tricks, he takes treats really gently, and walks really well with a training aid. He's a perfect dog for a young family, so why don't you come meet Chance today!

Gender: Male

Breed: Lab/pit mix

Approximate Age: 2 years old

Spay/Neuter Status: Yes, Chance is neutered!

Vaccinations: Yes, Chance is up-to-date with all his vaccinations.

Housetrained: Yes, Chance is housetrained!

Compatibility with Other Animals: Chance does well with female dogs and puppies, and he can tolerate male dogs. We're not sure how he does with cats though.

Personality: Chance is a playful, energetic dog. He actually has completed a "prison dog" program (where prisoners train and socialize dogs), so he knows lots of commands and tricks. Chance also loves agility and he does the jumps and goes through the tunnels and the chute really fast! He takes treats really gently and walks really well with a training aid.

Ideal Home: Due to Chance's energetic personality and activity level, he really needs to have a structural fence around his yard. He would also love a playmate (either 2-legged or 4-legged). But most of all, he just wants a loving home.

To Adopt: If you are interested in adopting or meeting Chance, please contact New Castle/Henry County Animal Shelter. You can actually find out more information by contacting Bonnie Krupa (Chance's trainer/rescuer) at 317-281-6124 or bkrupa@bsu.edu.
